Tom Cruise & Cameron Diaz In London: How Is He So Tall? (PHOTOS)

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

According to the Huffington Post, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz attended the premiere of “Knight and Day” in London on Thursday, and Cruise was almost as tall as Diaz, despite her 4-or-5 inch heels.

Cruise, 5′7, and Diaz, 5′9, posed for photos together and, while he is shorter, the difference was far less the 5 inches it theoretically should be, even with Diaz slightly slouching. Cruise’s boots appear to have a one-inch heel on the outside, but his knees are at about the same height as Diaz’s.

How’d he do it? Inside lifts? Scroll and decide.

What Lies Beneath
Give your body a bogus boost

If you spent the 4th like we did, eating and drinking more than humanly possible, you might have a problem looking put together this week.

Instead, here’s how to look like you’ve spent two months at the gym (by spending the equivalent of two month’s worth of gym fees).

Weight: Spanx Undershirts
Spanx — those spandex sausage casings that girls use to smooth out and slip into into bridesmaid dresses — are now available for men. Compression T-shirt, V-neck, and tank top styles sculpt your gut, make your pecs pop, and are invisible under clothes.

Height: Lift Kits insoles
More Nike Dunks than Dr. Scholl’s, Lift Kits are sporty insoles that boost the Tom Cruise-sized up to a full two inches. The cushioned neoprene gel insoles also relieve pressure on the spine, forcing your back to stand up straighter, adding extra (natural) height.

Men lie most about age, height and income

Online Dating is Bigger Than Porn Industry
Men lie most about age, height and income. Women lie about weight, physical build, and age

A growing amount of people is trying to find a mate online. A new infographic by Online Schools reveals dating sites are worth more than 1 billion dollars per year, which makes it bigger than the porn industry.

That’s because 40 million Americans date online, and, the average user spends $239 a year.

Those love seekers aren’t always honest. The infographic says men tend to lie most about their age, height, and income. The ladies tend to change facts about their weight, physical build, and age.

Not only looks matter though. Research by Dating Site OK Cupid reveals that a woman’s desirability online peaks when she’s 21. At age 26, women have more pursuers than men, but that all changes over time. By age 48, men have twice as many online pursuers as women.

Once there is a date, things tend to move pretty fast.

Surveys reveal 1 of 3 women who meet men online have sex on the first encounter. And couples who meet online seem to get married a lot faster: within 18 months compared to 42 months of couples who met offline.

eHarmony claims 236 of its members are married each day.

Derek White Takes ‘The Hills’ to New Heights

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Derek White’s days on The Hills and rumors of dating Audrina Patridge are over, but he’s still getting a kick out of watching the new season and is working to take his career to new heights.

Derek was once rumored to be dating Audrina, who then started dating Justin Bobby.

“Well Justin and I go back 13 years now, Audrina about four years and the rest only for two years,” Derek told OK! about how knows The Hills cast. “I worked in the surf community when I first came to California, and Justin was one of the youngest kids surfing on our surf team, that’s where we first met.”

Now Derek’s former rumored girlfriend has moved on to Ryan Cabrera.

“Well, to be honest I don’t know Ryan well at all, but I know that for the first time Audrina is actually happy. And from what I understand he treats her really good and they are really happy,” he explained to OK!. “I am stoked for her. She is a good girl with a good heart.”

And Derek is happy working on his business LiftKits, a height-increasing shoe insole.

“I first started modeling and acting when I first moved to California at 19. I was going to school at the time for finance. Shortly after, I started working in the real estate finance arena for nine years as a mortgage broker,” Derek explained of how his business came to be. ”

“After a short time back in L.A., I was up and going again booking acting and modeling gigs, and studying with Chick Vennera at Beverly Hills Playhouse. At this time I booked a few modeling gigs, one in particular in Miami for fashion week, I was modeling for Marceau jeans when I saw another one of the guy models backstage with a homemade lift in his shoe. I had never seen anything of the sort before,” he explained. “That’s where it all started, the idea to start a business soon followed after I realized that there was no one out there making anything like this. I saw an opportunity to make accessible something that could change people’s lives.”

In Hollywood, it sometimes helps to be tall.

“At 5′11 , I am very comfortable with my height. I am also very honest with the fact that society has placed a status quo on being tall, that’s also always been associated with men over six feet. So yeah, there were times I’d wear my dress boots out at night because they had a bigger heel on them pushing me to that 6 foot mark,” he admitted. “I couldn’t help but to think how many other guys out there do the same thing.”

But while Derek is working on his LiftKits business, he’s also enjoying watching his former cast-members wrap up the show!

“I am definitely eager to see what transpires here between the whole group. These people have been under a spotlight for a few years now. Some have stayed true to their roots and some have not,” he told OK!. “I can’t really speak for anyone other than Audrina and Justin. Those are the only two that I actually talk to and I know what’s going on with them. The rest of the cast, I just hear through the grapevine just like everyone else, and by the sounds of it, some of the other aren’t doing to well.”

“I am excited to see what MTV has thrown together,” added. “Yes this is a reality show, but yes MTV also helps to influence situations, so it will be interesting to see what they have prepared for The Hills audience.”

When Every Inch Matters, LiftKits Can Help

Friday, April 9th, 2010

From the wonderful people at RackedLA
Friday, April 9, 2010, by Lisa Boosin

When you think about it, science and technology have done a pretty good job of mitigating any real or perceived flaws in person’s physical appearance. Getting rid of acne, having thinner thighs, growing thicker eyelashes…sadly, there’s not a lot of help for the height-challenged.

At 5′9″, we don’t fall into that category. Though admittedly, as teens, we longed to be 6′. 5′9″ may be tall for a chick, but it’s not extraordinarily tall. Though we’ve successfully scaled many of the body-image issues of our younger years, we do still occasionally think, “A couple of extra inches would be nice.”

Enter Lift Kits. Yes, the same brand worn by Tom Cruise, Jeremy Piven, and Shia LaBeouf.
Continue reading “When Every Inch Matters, Lift Kits Can Help

We are suckers for the novel, so when these came onto the radar, we were elated. Lift Kits makes an assortment of rises for men and now for ladies, too: you can gain anywhere from .5″ to a full two inches. Our package came with the full range of inserts. Naturally, we went right to the turbo-charged two-incher.

Our first instinct was to cram them into a pair of stilettos. Like, duh, if you’re going to go for it, you might as well GO FOR IT. But the inserts proved to be too chunky. After some trial and error, we traded down for an inch and a half lift. We tried on at least five pairs of shoes to get a good fit, including ballet flats (no), Pumas (no) wedges (no), engineer boots (close, but no), and finally found comfort in a pair of Loeffler Randall boots with a sliver wedge. For the higher lifts, the boots are a better choice, since the added insole can make your heel slip out of your shoes.

We walked around our neighborhood for about an hour. The shoes were still a bit on the snug side, but not bad. Like an extra-blimpy cushion insole, which did feel kinda nice on the feet. We went into a few shops on Vermont, even ran into a friend and chatted for a while. We wanted to blurt out, “So do you notice anything different?” But no one said a thing.

It’s possible that we’re not the best qualified to write this post. The Lift Kits were both functional and comfortable, but we didn’t notice an overwhelming infusion of self-confidence—like the kind we get when we don a mega-pushup bra or something. Height isn’t the same issue across the genders—after all, short or petite women are often seen as being cute, more delicate or even more inherently female. But we suppose for the average guy (who clocks in at 5′9″) or his smaller counterparts, the extra inch or so could make a world of difference.

We invite you to find out for yourself: we have four spare pairs, and we’d like to put them to good use! Drop us an email at la@racked.com, and we’ll hook up the first four responses.

Apparel stores for short men are getting harder to find

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

LA Times
By Sharon Bernstein
March 31, 2010

Two of the few stores that remain are in Southern California, where owners credit shorter immigrants, certain ethnic groups, jockeys and diminutive Hollywood types for keeping them in business.

Jimmy Au, founder of Jimmy Au's for Men 5'8\

The marketplace for short men’s clothing is, well, shrinking.

With Americans growing taller, and recessionary pressure in the specialty clothing market, it’s become harder than ever to find apparel stores for short men. Just a few now remain of the dozens that dotted the national landscape years ago.

Actor Ben Giroux can tell you all about it. “To shop for clothes as a short man is one of the most aggravating things you can try to do,” said the 5-foot-2 Giroux, who has guest-starred in the Fox series “Bones” and played a gruff elf in the Disney movie “Santa Buddies.”

At the Beverly Center recently, he said, a clerk in a high-end men’s store gave Giroux a quick once-over and shook his head sadly.

“You’re either walking into a boys department somewhere and you’re swallowing your dignity, or you can shop at one or two places,” Giroux said.

Two of the last holdouts are in Southern California, where owners credit short immigrants, certain ethnic groups, jockeys and diminutive Hollywood types for keeping them in business despite tough times. In the Midwest, one of the last short men’s stores is staying in business by selling Green Bay Packers underwear (all sizes), among other items, on the side.

It’s hard to find the right villain for this sartorial assault on the little guy.

Store owners like to blame casual Fridays, saying the 1990s practice marked the beginning of a trend away from well-fitting business clothes for men. No longer needing to buy suits, the reasoning goes, smaller men just went to discounters or department stores to buy khakis and had them shortened.

There are also fewer short guys around.

The average height for an American man is now close to 5 feet 10 inches — nearly 2 inches taller than in 1960, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

“As people eat better, they grow taller,” sighed Bob Stern, who closed his Cleveland store and Internet business, Short Sizes Inc., last year.

In Southern California, Alan and Jimmy Au figure they hit the mother lode of short guys with money to spend on clothes when they moved their store, Jimmy Au’s for Men 5′8″ and Under, to Beverly Hills from Glendale in 2006.

“Just look out on the street on a weekend night,” said Alan Au, dragging a visitor toward Beverly Drive. “All night long it’s a parade of short men with tall women.”

Giroux, 25, is one of them. In nightclubs, he says, women tower over him like trees in a forest, especially when they’re wearing high heels.

Gary Stevens is one of the world’s best-known jockeys and is familiar to millions as the actor who played jockey George Woolf in the movie “Seabiscuit.” The 47-year-old horse-racing Hall of Famer won eight Triple Crown races and eight Breeders’ Cup races.

But he can’t buy clothes off the rack at a department store. “I’m 5-3,” said Stevens, who was stocking up on dress shirts at Jimmy Au’s. “It’s really hard to find things that fit and are comfortable and look nice.”

Jimmy Au, 71, got into the business of selling clothes to short men in the 1960s, measuring the jockeys at local racetracks for suits and sending orders to his father’s tailor in Hong Kong.

At the family store just off Beverly Drive, neat displays of suits take up nearly half the space, while dress shirts in a dozen colors line shelves. There are short ties, short khakis, short jeans and small shoes. There are bomber jackets in three kinds of leather and long wool coats made to show off a small man’s physique instead of enveloping him in baggy folds.

“If the clothes fit properly, they make you look taller,” Jimmy Au said, spinning around in a long coat. Smaller men don’t just need shorter sleeves or pant legs, he said. The shoulders should be narrower. The pocket needs to be sewn on higher or it will wind up closer to the stomach than the chest.

Since moving to Beverly Hills, the store has shifted its product mix so that it’s more upscale — a pair of jeans goes for $200; a suit is about $900. In classic Los Angeles style, the walls are lined with autographed photographs of actors, among them Danny DeVito and Al Pacino.

On a recent weekday, costume designers rushed in and out, picking up clothing for short actors whom they would not name.

In Santa Ana at the Jockey Club store, owner Al Martin says he is picking up Internet sales from customers around the nation whose favorite shops have closed. He doesn’t get as much Hollywood business as Jimmy Au’s, Martin said, but Southern California has enough short immigrants and ethnic groups to keep up the customer base.

“My business is one-third Asians, one-third Hispanics and one-third Jews,” he said.

Apparel industry analyst Marshal Cohen said the recession had been hard on purveyors of all specialty sizes, whether they are for big customers or smaller ones. That’s because it’s the marginal businesses that get hit first when customers begin to cut back.

Some department stores stock suits and blazers in short sizes, he said, but little else. Macy’s, for example, said most stores sell suits in a size 36 short, which could fit a man who is 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-8.

Although the market for big and tall clothing is growing, the customer base for small sizes is not, Cohen said.

“The short business represents the smallest part of the population,” he said. “That’s not a pun. That’s the way it is.”

It’s also hard to find manufacturers who will make items for shorter men. The Au family is ordering from an Italian manufacturer who produces clothing for short European men. Martin buys from a Canadian manufacturer.

In Milwaukee, Gary Anders is keeping his store, Napoleon’s Tailor, afloat by selling Green Bay Packers merchandise — in regular sizes.

“I’ve got everything in here from the hats to the T-shirts down to ladies unmentionables,” he said. “I had to do something.”

Leg-Lengthening, a Trend in China as Reported by Oprah

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Yesterday on Oprah, the show focused on a growing trend of leg-lengthening in China. As you will see from a portion of the article below Leg Lengthing is definitely the extreme. You have to be able to spend months on end in the hospital and have 10’s of thousands of dollars to part with. Most people don’t. In any case LiftKits provide a cost effective, safe, instant and easy way to increase your height up to 2 inches.

Lisa Ling reports on the recent beauty and cosmetic surgery boom on Oprah.com.

In this part of the world, Lisa says height is a sign of status, and oftentimes, it’s a prerequisite for success. “Minimum height requirements are not unusual for many jobs, for admission to some colleges, even to land a date,” Lisa says.

As medical technology improves, more people are going under the knife to have this painful, controversial procedure, which can help patients grow anywhere from a few inches to a full foot.

At the Shanghai Height Increasing Specialized Institute, Lisa meets Dr. Bai Helong, a Chinese doctor who modernized the leg-lengthening procedure. He says his patients want to be taller for many reasons.

“China has 1.3 billion people, so getting a job is quite difficult,” Dr. Bai Helong says. “As a result, a short person not only experiences difficulty in getting a job, but also trouble in their marriage, love life, family, career and many other areas.”

Jessy, a 27-year-old who’s interested in undergoing the procedure, says she’s willing to take a year off work to grow a few inches. Currently, she’s 5′3”.

“I want to be 5′6” or 5′7”. Just being tall makes me feel much confidence,” she says. “I’m always jealous when I see tall girls walking around. I just want to be just like them.”
Dr. Bai’s patients go to great lengths to stand a few inches above their competition. “Pain is definitely a part of the procedure, which is both horrifying and miraculous,” Lisa says.

To lengthen the leg, holes are drilled into the leg bone and screws are inserted to stabilize an adjustable leg brace. Then, surgeons carefully saw the leg bone in half below the knee, and the braces slowly stretch the bones apart. Over time, Dr. Bai says new bone grows into the gap and increases the person’s height.

Lisa says most patients are out of commission for at least six months after the surgery, and others remain in seclusion from friends and family for a full year. At this time, the bulky braces are removed, and the new bone is hard enough to withstand normal activity.

Despite the pain and price—anywhere from $10,000 to $40,000—Lisa says patients think it’s worth the sacrifice. “If this is something that does make people feel better, far be it for us to intrude our opinions,” she says. “But it certainly is very extreme. I had never experienced anything quite like it.”

Study hall

A new exhibition at the University of California, Davis, is bringing what the world puts on its feet up to eye level. The UC Davis Design Museum’s current show, “Stepping Out,” features shoes from across the globe and from bygone eras. The event was researched and curated with the help of university students, including Nora Cary. “Shoes do more than complete the perfect outfit,” Cary said in a statement. “All shoes have something important to tell us, whether it is about function, fashion or folk life.” The exhibition includes footwear from places as diverse as Iran, India and the U.S., and will be on display through July 12. Heightened Appeal

If women can step up into sky-high heels, why can’t men add an inch or two to their height? California-based LiftKits offers an affordable and immediate way to make a man a tad taller through its height-enhancing shoe insoles. The product comes in two versions: the Hi-Top, which adds as much as 2 inches in height, and the Lo-Top, offering 1 inch of boost. The creators claim that in addition to adding height, the inserts can improve a wearer’s confidence and even their posture. LiftKits are sold online at Myliftkits.com, priced at $20 for the Lo-Tops and $25 for the Hi-Tops. They also will be available for wholesale purchase in late 2009. J.F.

Me & Hue

It’s no secret that a great pair of shoes enhances a woman’s appearance. But Trove Tkees, a new line of flip-flops from the creators of apparel company Trove & Co., goes one step further by billing itself as “cosmetics for your feet.” The Foundation collection comes in several skin-tone nudes, with thin leather straps that give the illusion of longer legs. The Highlighter offering, like it’s counterpart, adds a touch of shimmer to the feet, while the matte Liner looks add graphic style to your silhouette. But founders Jesse Burnett and Carly Mandelbaum aren’t stopping there. More footwear offerings are in the works, in shadows, lipsticks, blushes, glosses and creams. Trove Tkees are priced at $46 and are available at Tkees.com. Meghan Cass

Window to the Web

Canadian department store Holt Renfrew is tuned in to the tech craze. The nine-store chain was set to unveil its newest window display last week, saluting the creativity and influence of fashion bloggers. Though details about the windows were being kept under wraps at press time, Holts’ creative director, John Gerhardt, took inspiration from top bloggers, including The Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman (at right), Bryan Boy of Bryanboy.com, Tommy Ton of Jakandjil.com and Jane Aldridge of Seaofshoes.com (above). Footwear News also learned that the displays will have an interactive component. At the Toronto flagship store, a 24-hour interactive screen will allow the public to vote for a contestant to be Holt Renfrew’s first in-house blogger and “contemporary correspondent.” M.C.

YoungHollywood.com partakes in an impromptu test to see if LiftKits height increasing shoe inserts really help men grow taller or not. The interviewer tries on a pair in his own hi-top shoes and you can see a noticeable difference between his before an after when standing next to a girl who was naturally quite a bit taller before he inserted the LiftKIts into his sneakers.
