We are not aware that Robert Downey Jr’s film Iron Man 2 is subtitled “the glam rock years”, so we have to assume that the high heels he is wearing on set are to enhance his diminutive stature. Stacked heels and shoe lifts are nothing new in Hollywood – Pasquale di Fabrizio, the self-styled “shoemaker to the stars”, made shoes for everyone from Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson until he retired from his shop in LA, and revealed that he discreetly added height to many celebrities (he named Michael Douglas and Sylvester Stallone among others).

On the brilliantly odd and self-explanatory website celebheights.com, which has a contributor called Glenn, 5ft 8in, who gets himself photographed with celebrities such as Mel Gibson and Leonardo Di Caprio for comparison, like a human tape measure, the consensus among its fans is that most male celebrities have a little help.

Simon Cowell has been known to wear conspicuously chunky heels, and a picture of wee Bono on the beach, wearing heels that add a couple of inches to his height, says all you need to know about rock star vanity, while Nicolas Sarkozy, whose wife, at 5ft 9in, is four inches taller than him, is famously a fan of a stacked heel.

Tom Cruise also often appears on a level with Katie Holmes, his 2in-taller wife, and is probably the celebrity that drives ordinary men to buy height-enhancing shoes, says Aaron Sarin, the director of Secretshoes.co.uk, which designs and makes shoes with concealed lifts that can add up to three inches. His shoes are popular for weddings, job interviews and dates, he says. “Women are wearing higher and higher heels and men want to be taller than their girlfriends,” he says. “We get a lot of sales guys who want to be seen as bigger in stature.” Sarin started making “elevator” shoes in 2000 and says he is selling more than ever, adding, predictably, “It’s a growth area.”

What is Heightism?

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Heightism as described by Wikipedia is: a form of discrimination based on height. In principle it can refer to unfavorable treatment of either unusually tall or short people.

Wikipedia breaks Heightism into 6 categories:
1. bullying
2. employment
3. politics
4. conflict
5. dating and marriage
6. in the media

We’ll cover heightism in dating and marriage, bullying and employment as noted at wikipedia.com.

Heightism in dating and marriage

Heightism may also be a factor in dating preferences. For some people, height is a major factor in sexual attractiveness.

The greater reproductive success of taller men is attested to by studies indicating that taller men are more likely to be married and to have more children, except in societies with severe gender imbalances caused by war. Quantitative studies of woman-for-men personal advertisements have shown strong preference for tall men, with a large percentage indicating that a man significantly below average height was unacceptable.

Conversely, studies have shown that women of below average height are more likely to be married and have children than women of above average height. Some reasons which have been suggested for this situation include earlier fertility of shorter women, and that a shorter woman makes her husband feel taller in comparison and therefore more masculine.

It is unclear and debated as to the extent to which such preferences are innate or are the function of a society in which height discrimination impacts on socio-economic status. Certainly, much is always made in newspapers and magazines of celebrity couples with a notable height difference, especially where a man is shorter than his wife (for example, Jamie Cullum, five inches (12.7 cm) shorter at 5′ 6″ (168 cm) than Sophie Dahl, though the difference is often exaggerated).

Heightism and bullying

Research shows that shorter people are more likely to be victims of bullying. Because bullying during childhood and adolescence often undermines the victim’s self-esteem, some researchers speculate that the lower levels of achievement of shorter people (particularly men) in later life may be partly or largely explained by this lower self esteem rather than by discrimination.

Heightism in employment

Some jobs do require or at least favor tall people, including some manual labor jobs, most professional sports, and fashion modeling. U.S. military pilots have to be 64 to 77 inches (163 to 196 cm) tall with a sitting height of 34 to 40 inches (86 to 102 cm).[4] These exceptions noted, in the great majority of cases a person’s height would not seem to have an effect on how well they are able to perform their job. Nevertheless, studies have shown that short people are paid less than taller people, with disparities similar in magnitude to the race and gender gaps.

A survey of Fortune 500 CEO height in 2005 revealed that they were on average 6 feet (183 cm) tall, which is approximately 2-3 inches (7.5 cm) taller than the average American man. Fully 30% of these CEOs were 6 foot 2 inches (188 cm) tall or more; in comparison only 3.9% of the overall United States population is of this height. Similar surveys have uncovered that less than 3% of CEOs were below 5′7″ in (170 cm) height or taller than 6’2″ in height. Ninety percent of CEOs are of above average height.

Some epidemiological studies have shown that intelligence is positively correlated, albeit very slightly, with height in human populations (see Height and intelligence). This does not imply that many short people are not highly intelligent, or that changes in physical height have a direct effect on cognitive ability. Intelligence is believed to be influenced by many different factors. Individuals with a wide range of intelligence can be observed at any given height. It may be that good childhood nutrition tends to result in greater adult height, and good childhood nutrition also tends to result in higher adult intelligence. A recent study using four data sets from the US and UK found that, after controlling for differences in cognitive test scores, there was no detectable independent effect of height itself on adult earnings. It did indicate that intelligence influences earnings. Taller people, on average are more intelligent because environmental factors such as nutrition during childhood, also influences intelligence. The study concludes that on average, taller people do not earn more just because of their physical height.

Others believe that height has a significant independent impact on economic success, pointing to specific instances of height-based discrimination. Surveys of attitudes do reveal that people both perceive and treat people of shorter stature as inferior, and that economic differentials exist which may be the result of height discrimination. The relationship between height, cognitive ability, and discrimination based on height remains a subject of debate.

Movin’ On Up…to an ideal height

Los Angeles 03.10.2009
As GayListDaily like to tell it in only a way that they can;

Trying on a mother’s heels is a time-honored gay youth tradition. Whether the experiment results in a lifetime of drag queen ferocity or merely a moment of realization, for those gays who grow up to not have grown up, the highness heels provide will always be cherished.

Not to boast, but as adults we have yet to find a pump (of the footwear variety) in our size. Instead, we were patiently waiting to have our knees done in Malaysia; that was until a simple new product allowed us to remove our names from the waiting lists (at least until the prices come down).

Lift Kits are helping us shorter gays give a beautifully manicured middle finger to nature. The inserts add up to 2” of height via a comfortable air-cushion insole that fits into most shoes.

Don’t get us wrong; there are aspects of being vertically-challenged that we enjoy, such as: less height reads better on camera (Tom Cruise, anyone?); a shorter stature often lessens the frequency of knee rug burns; and it’s easier to read price tags at the breakneck speeds required during Barneys Warehouse sales.

But there are those times when a girl just wants extra inches.

We’ve been tramping around WeHo and Silver Lake with the inserts for a week, and have noticed that the Lift Kits conquer two birds with two inches – not only do they give us a boost in height, they also enhance our confidence.

That was until our “friends” failed to point out that our jeans became floods thanks to our unfamiliar new height, letting us suffer through an entire week of snickers.

Those jealous, short bitches.

Celebrity Heights and Weights

Monday, April 6th, 2009

by Michael Lawstock

The number of obese people around the world is increasing at an alarming rate. From sedentary lifestyles to lack of exercise and junk food, almost every conceivable reason is being attributed to this rising number. Fortunately these days there is an increased awareness about losing weight among people, thanks mainly to celebrities. In fact celebrity weight and height can act as the much needed trigger for anyone to start off on a program to shed all those extra flab.

Not all celebrities were born with the perfect shape or figure. Most of them have worked hard to get that kind of a shape. Take for instance Jennifer Lopez, who is weighs 120 pounds and is 5’7″ tall. She is a strict disciplinarian when it comes to regular workouts and her diet. The same goes for most of the macho men of Hollywood too. Sylvester Stallone stands 5’9″ tall and weighs 220 pounds, while Arnold Schwarzenegger stands 6’2″ tall and weighs 257 pounds. These two legendary stars have been in fact instrumental in people getting more conscious about their fitness and physique the world over. Their brawn has been able to draw crowds to movies along with making them health conscious.

The next time you drool over George Clooney who is weighs 210 pounds and his 5’11″ tall or on Brad Pitt who is all of 6 feet tall and weighs 200 pounds, you should also remember the kind of hard work these celebrities have put in for getting into that kind of a shape. Celebrity weight and height is mostly about working out regularly and sticking to a strict diet.

A diet that is rich in healthy carbohydrates and fats is one of the secrets of celebrity weight and height. Most of them gorge on food items that are rich in protein and fiber. Fiber is easily digestible and proteins provide the much needed energy for them to workout. This kind of a diet also ensures that a lesser number of calories are consumed by a person too.

Celebrity weight and height has become a fetish with many people. Although it the vital physical measurements of a celebrity can act as a good motivational factor for those embarking on a fitness program, one should not be carried away with false claims that you may sometimes come across. You must always remember that unless and until you are naturally well endowed, there is no other short cut to celebrity measurements. You will simply need to enjoy your workout sessions and eat right.
